You do not need imported foods, powders or a strict "clean eating" list to lose weight in Nigeria. You need meals you already enjoy, in the right portions, with enough protein to stay full. This is a free 7-day plan built entirely from real Nigerian dishes — and every calorie figure below is the actual per-serving number from Ilera's dish library, not a rough guess.
How weight loss actually works
The only thing that reliably drives fat loss is a calorie deficit — eating a little less than your body burns each day. Everything else (meal timing, "detoxes", cutting carbs) only matters if it helps you hold that deficit. Three simple habits do most of the work:
- Protein at every meal. Beans, eggs, fish, chicken and lean meat keep you full for longer, so you eat less without feeling deprived. See our guide to high-protein Nigerian foods.
- Control the swallow and the rice. The soup and protein are rarely the problem — a mountain of eba or a full plate of white rice is. Keep the protein, shrink the starch.
- Go easy on the oil. Palm and vegetable oil are pure calories. A modest amount is fine; a heavy hand quietly adds hundreds of calories a plate.
The 7-day plan
Each day below sits in a typical weight-loss range once portions are scaled to you. The calories shown are for a standard serving of each dish; the day total is the sum of those servings. Tap any meal to see its full macros and cost.

Breakfast sets the tone
A protein breakfast is the easiest way to eat less later in the day. Good Nigerian options and their real calories per serving:
- Moi moi & pap — about 400 kcal, 17g protein, ~₦268 to make.
- Boiled yam & egg sauce — about 455 kcal, 16g protein, ~₦986 to make.
- Beans, egg & plantain — about 480 kcal, 23g protein, ~₦469 to make.
Make it yours
This plan is a starting point. Your ideal portions depend on your body and goal — a 90 kg man losing weight and a 60 kg woman need very different amounts of the same jollof. Ilera takes your details, sets your calorie target, then scales each of these dishes to fit and builds your shopping list priced at your local market.
